Hi John,
I’ve looked at a few alternatives, but in my experience the lack of, or incomplete support of, library management and supported boards, kind-a eliminates most of them for me.
So I’m sticking to the standard Arduino IDE.
I’m sure the different alternatives keep developing, and I’m also 100% sure I haven’t seen them all.
To name a few:
- Platform.io (tends to go a lot deeper and basically supports the microcontroller/AVR)
- Eclipse Addons like this one and this one (but I never liked Eclipse – just a matter of personal preference)
- There is even a template for XCode (macOS) (I really do not like XCode either haha)
- An addon for Visual Studio (I’m mostly working on a Mac and on macOS Visual Studio is not Visual Studio)
- Atmel Studio (this is more of a pro environment)
- CodeBender (cloud based – not my thing)
- There is also a NetBeans plugin
So there are alternatives, but at the moment I do not like any of them.
If you’re a software developer, you could download the source of the Arduino IDE and extend its functionality – but I can imagine that would be a bit much
